Cancer:

Both of my parents died from cancer. My mother from breast cancer and my father from prostrate cancer.  The awareness levels of cancer especially in Africa are incredibly low and as bad as this is, there is also a stigma attached to having cancer. I have heard alot of people say that Africans don't get cancer. This is incorrect information. Most International donors fund for the prevention of malaria, cholera etc and whilst these are extremely important in the African context, there are people dieing from cancer when they could have a much better chance of living if they were aware of the signs at an early stage and/or took the necessary precautions.

My friend Gaby Lobban inspired me with facts she came up with, about cancer in Sub Saharan Africa. It became even clearer to me that this is an area that has gone under the radar for too long.  Cervical cancer is the number one cancer problem in Zambia. Studies show that there may be a correlation between mining communities and the rise in cancer exacerbated through HIV.

There are close to no self breast examination materials available for young and adult females and the majority of women in Zambia do not go for annual mammograms after the age of forty. The majority of Zambian males do not go for prostrate testing. These should all be standard procedures in Zambia and the rest of Africa.

Families with cancer do not have adequate support on a number of levels.

My very good friend Paula Davies was diagnosed with breast cancer some two years ago. I was blown away by the resilient, positive and somewhat humorous way she handled this. Paula has kindly allowed me to include an article on her illustrous journey with cancer.

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer it was in an era where everything was so clinical and negative. It was like a death sentence had been placed on you and the care givers were 'cold and methodical'. Instead of my mother being shown love, care, and given a whole bunch of pampering and nurturing she got the opposite. She was such a brave soul. I would like cancer patients and their families to be nurtured, supported and pampered, with love.

My committment.

I didn't really know how I could make a difference to cancer. It all seemed very very BIG. Could anything i do really make a difference?

After many discussions with my three clever and creative daughters, we came up with the following two committments.

Care Package Initiatives: Cancer patients and their families need pampering and support in the form of  a combination of pamper, love and money packages. All monies received shall be spent on creating these packages for families with cancer. These packages of love alleviate stress that is inevitable in families where a member of the family is experiencing cancer and treatments. Each package shall be gift wrapped with a bow tie and shall also contain an individual hand made 'beanie' for the cancer patient/s with nurturing gifts.

Cancer Awareness Campaigns. More girls in Africa need to be know how to do breast self examinations. The earlier the detection, the greater the chance to reduce the lump, get rid of it and/or have more options available to them. Women need to go for mammograms. Women need to be protected when having sex. More men in Africa need to protect their partners. More men need to be informed about prostrate cancer.

By donating to the Mung'omba Legacy Charity Fund, YOU will make a difference and you will save lifes physically, metaphorically, emotionally etc. Everyone of these charities will benefit from your thoughts, generiosity, love and funding. Thank you for your giving, inspired by the Mung'ombas.
